STIRLING SUMMER SCHOOL 2010

Restricted to Scottish EG branch members or EG members residing in Scotland.
4-day course Wed 25th - Sun 29th August
Marie Roper - FROM PIXELS TO TEXTILES
We will investigate the possibilities of digital design using the software package COREL PAINT SHOP PRO. A 30-day free trial version may be downloaded for the course. You must have competent computer skills to enrol for this course since there is no technical support available. You must bring your own PAT-tested laptop.
The aim will be to create a design for a piece of textile work. Using individual personal sources the students will experiment with a variety of techniques and functions available in the chosen software. There will also be the possibility of some blockprinting and other art techniques used to explore the inspiration during the course.
By scanning and using digital photography, we will create new imagery which can be used as a source for patterns, printed fabric or transferred to fabric. There will also be an opportunity to experiment with other stitchable surfaces for printing and stitching, eg tissue paper.
Marie Roper studied at Stafford college of Art and currently teaches City and Guilds courses in Patchwork and Quilting, Embroidery and Creative Computing. She creates digital images using her artwork, drawings and textiles to produce complex images. She exhibits with group SiX http://www.sixart.co.ok/marie_Roper.htm

STIRLING SUMMER SCHOOL 2010

Restricted to EG Scottish branch members and EG members residing in Scotland
2-day course Wed 25th - Friday 27th August
Dorothy Tucker KANTHA
Kantha is a Bangladeshi word for cloth and is also the name given to a form of hand-stitching used to make quilts. By folding and stitching together layers of washed and worn fabric, we will make a cloth which is lovely to handle. As we work with the simplest of stitches to outline shapes and fill spaces, we will become intrigued by the subtle changes which begin to take place in the soft surfaces of the cloth, then we will be drawn into stitching a design in which the meaning and textile qualities evolve as we work.
Kantha can be addictive and soothing. Once started you may choose to stitch on and on!
Dorothy Tucker is Education Officer for the Embroiderers' Guild, editing "Textile Ideas" for Young Embroiderers. She is also a freelance embroiderer and tutor, and the author of several books. She is a member of the Textile Study Group, the Society of Designer Craftsmen, the Museums Association and the Group for Education in Museums.
