NW Day at Manchester was a huge success. We are all looking forward to the next, hosted Jointly by Lytham St Annes and Blackpool.
There are 10 flourishing YE groups in the North West. They are run by enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers who brim over with exciting ideas. The youngsters are 80% girls, 20% boys aged 5-17years. Aged 5-8 they need an adult in attendance at all meetings. The YE learn, as you would expect a wide range of stitches. But modern embroidery is no longer restricted to stitching onto cloth. They are taught printing, beading, patchwork, collage, weaving, felt making etc., In fact todays world of embroidery encompasses all stitch and material techniques. A truly wonderful craft to explore and enjoy. As well as the opportunity to show their completed work in the local branch's exhibitions, there is always the possibility of entering their pieces into Regional and National competitions. There are Regional workshops organised once or twice a year when the YE can meet up with others from the Region and experience working under a tutor who is not their own Group leader.
All of the young people just come along to the meetings for fun, often with a friend or sibling, but many of them stay for years and become so enthusiastic and expert that they choose Textiles as their GCSE option and then advance to A level. A very few go on to Manchester Metropolitan University or similar to do their degree.
For the annual membership fee of £7 the Young Embroiderer receives three copies of Textile Ideas. This full colour magazine is filled with practical projects, write-ups and photos of past events done by the NW and other regions and information about exhibitions where more exciting, innovative work can be seen.
