I am delighted to welcome those members who have joined us this year. I hope you will enjoy our meetings and workshops, and be able to take part in many of the activities. Do let any member of the committee know if you have any questions, need advice, or if you have suggestions or comments. This, of course, does not only apply to new members. The committee is always open to new ideas; ways of improving the running of the Branch; suggestions for speakers, etc. So please come forward.
Christmas will soon be upon us again and as a Branch we are looking forward to our "bring and share" lunch and social get-together in December. Fingers crossed that we shall not have to cancel for the third year in succession due to bad weather.
As the weather grows colder, the nights longer and we spend more time indoors, I realise more than ever how important embroidery and textiles are to me. It is something in which I can be completely absorbed, so that I do not notice the time or weather. Recently I was speaking to someone, who, in his early seventies, is still doing an active full-time job. He said that he could never retire because he would have nothing to fill his time. While he is lucky still to be able to do a relatively strenuous job, I thought it was a great pity that he had no other interests. How lucky we are to have this absorbing and fascinating pursuit! We should be spreading the word wherever and whenever possible, so that more people can enjoy it, whatever their age!
With best wishes
Dee.

Quilts4London is a fantastic project to make pennants for all the athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The aim is to make an A3-sized pennant for each athlete participating in the Games - about 14,000 pennants in total.
The organisers, who spoke about the project at the Voluntary Arts "Growing the Grassroots" seminar on Tuesday (18 October 2011), need to get many pennants made by the end of this year, so are looking for people to help make the pennants and also spread the word about this fantastic project which has been awarded the Inspire Mark.
The project is open to people of all ages and abilities and gives quilters, felt makers, embroiderers and textile artists the opportunity to express their support through the medium of fabric, fibre and stitch.
The idea came from quilters Irene Heathcote and Catherine Hill. Instructions and templates are freely downloadable from the website at www.quilts4london.org.uk. The International Felt Makers Association, Batik Guild, Cross Stitch Guild, UK Hand Knitting Association, Guild of Silk Painters, the Braid Society, and the Woodturners of Great Britain are involved ? it is a wonderful way to showcase the diverse forms of textiles.
