AYLESBURY VALE EMBROIDERERS' GUILD PROGRAMME 2012
We are a friendly group who meet on the third Saturday* of each month (except August) at Stoke Mandeville Methodist Church, Eskdale Road, Stoke Mandeville, AYLESBURY, Bucks HP22 5UJ. Meetings are from 2.30 - 4.30 p.m.

Entrance fee for Guild members; £2.50, visitors £4.00 per meeting (max 3 visits per year), students £1, accompanied under 16's free.
Annual subscription £30 (2nd branch members £15)

"EMBROIDERY PAST AND PRESENT" with Ann-Mary Johnstone
We are delighted that our Chairman has agreed to give a talk to us, drawing on her immense knowledge and experience of collecting textiles over many years. Ann-Mary will illustrate her talk by showing us examples of different types of embroidery from her own historical collection, in addition to modern examples of the same techniques. Not to be missed!

"BOWLED OVER" with Kath Danswan
Kath will talk about the exquisite embroidered silk bowls for which she has become renowned, and which inspired her to write her first book "Beautiful Bowls and Colourful Creatures", published internationally by The Linen Press in November 2006. Her work is in private collections worldwide.

"SCARF ON SOLUBLE FABRIC" with Marilyn Pipe
Another chance for a relaxing, rewarding and fun day with Marilyn, this time creating a beautiful scarf using a sandwich of soluble fabric and strips of various materials such as silks and scrim, combined with machine embroidery. These unique scarves can then be completed with simple straight stitch or embellished with machine embroidery if preferred. This course can be enjoyed by the complete beginner as well as the more advanced machine embroiderer. All materials can be purchased on the day if required. Book early!

We wear buttons every day, but how much do we know about their origins? Jenny is a member of the British Button Society and been collecting and researching for over 30 years. Her talk is illustrated with slides and she will bring a display of her buttons. "THE MEANING OF STITCH - A PERSONAL JOURNEY" with Catherina Petit
Based in Hertfordshire, Catherina is a textile and mixed media artist who likes to use a range of stitch and fabric manipulation techniques in a contemporary style, incorporating a multitude of different and often recycled materials. Her passion lies in expressing personal concepts and meaning through textiles, often incorporating text and symbolic imagery. Catherine?s work ranges from wall hangings and collages to applied art forms such as bags, cushions, book covers, etc. She has work in private collections in the UK, France and the Netherlands and one of her collages from the "Sweet Life" series was bought by a Starbucks coffee shop.

"COSTUME, EMBELLISHMENTS AND EMBROIDERY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY" with Helen McCook
Helen McCook graduated in Printed & Dyed Textiles with Art History in 2000 and then spent three years training in hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework. She then worked as Head of Costume and Textiles at Bonham's Auction House followed by a year spent as Atelier and Production Manager for the embroiderers Hand & Lock. Images of garments displaying her work for fashion companies have been used in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle Collections and Hello Magazine.

"EDWARD BURNE-JONES AND THE REVIVAL OF ART EMBROIDERY" with Lynn Hulse
Originally trained as a musicologist, in 2003 Lynn decided to change her focus and engage with her passionate interest of embroidery. She is Tutor in Contextual Studies at the royal School of Needlework and has co-curated exhibitions on their behalf. Lynn is also joint editor of Text, the journal of the Textile Society, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. In addition to her illustrated talk, Lynn will bring along some antique embroideries from her collection for us to see.

As seen at several of the Knitting and Stitching Shows, Jill will bring along the large, flamboyant free-standing ruffs that she is well known for! Jill will talk about the story behind her unusual graduate installation work and will show us her sketch books, in addition to ongoing work that has developed from the original project. This will most definitely be a "hands-on" session to delight and enjoy.

"THE FLOWER BROOCH" - an experimental textile workshop with Jill Flower
The project will be to complete a modern and unique brooch in a day - a new and contemporary way of using recycled papers to produce a piece of wearable art! All pieces will be completely personal and unique, developing differently; different shapes, colours and patterns; some bold and solid, others delicate and dainty, embellished and decorated with sequins, baubles and beads. Bring along your sewing machine; only basic knowledge required. Early booking advised.

After training in costume design at university and completing a 3 year apprenticeship at the Royal School of Needlework in hand embroidery, Katie has set up freelance to challenge and stretch her imagination and skills to new lengths and in many directions. Katie will show us some of her lovely work and comes highly recommended by AVEG members who met her at Art in Action at Waterperry in 2011.
